Emergency Preparedness Fair

Hi everyone,

Thursday I was visiting Lucy Stern of the Houston North Stake and she is right in the middle of planning a huge Emergency Preparedness Fair for their stake. For those who do know know where that it, their stake center is next door (to the south) of the Houston Welfare Services building (which houses the Peanut Butter Factory, Dry Pack Cannery, Bishop Storehouse, Employment Office, and Social Services).

It will be held:

May 29th from 10am to 2pm
at Hafer Road Houston North Stake Center

If anyone will be up in the direction or have friends at work who live in the area, this even is open to everyone in the Houston area.

Some of the classes being taught are as follows:

Dan Riley - from the National Weather Service (12noon to 1pm only)
Alternative cooking
Water storage
Blue tarping of roofs
Boarding up windows
Ham radio
Couponing
Chain saw SAFETY booth
CERT
State Farm - to talk about the different needs and types of insurance
Employment
Canning in your homes
Dehydration of foods
Water filtration
Honey
Family Finances
Above ground gardening
Dry Pack Canning
72 Hour Kits
Gamma Seal lids
Kiddie Korner - for how they should help in emergencies
and many others

She was still pulling together more topics as I spoke to her. Lucy is a down to earth, "get-to-the-point" type of person. She wants to have as much information available at the Fair that no one will go away saying that anything was left out. They are trying to get as much from the city, county, state, and federal government agencies over Emergency Preparedness as possible, so all I can say is that it will be well worth anyone's time to make it an outing for the entire family - especially those who are new to the Houston area and have never experienced hurricanes or severe weather or other problems.
